Summer 2015

Our Summer 2015 course took place from 11th to 14th August 2015.

We took 13 children to Milden Hall in Suffolk and took Africa as our theme.

Art.

The inspiration for our art came from looking at the patterns and colours in African fabrics and thinking about where the ideas came from.

The children initially did observational drawings of African objects with fabrics incorporated into the still life settings. We then spent time outside looking for and collecting patterns from nature. These formed the inspiration for prints which we enlarged to create repeating patterns which created a wall hanging and backdrop for our dance and music performance.

Dance.

Taking Africa as our theme, the children looked at the fabrics from across the continent and used the patterns to create motifs. We used music from Paul Simon's Graceland album and they put their ideas together to create a performance.

Music.

The children learnt the greeting song Si Si Si Tunata, a song which stared life in the Congo and came to Europe via Belgium. They sang it as a three-part round.

They then worked in three groups to compose and play their own versions of the song. All the composition and arrangements were done by the children, and performed for our hosts.
